Sisa

Joyce Pool's own roots are in Suriname and this is what led her to write a compelling story about slavery in Suriname in the 18th century. Map, a white planter's daughter, escapes death after an attack by the French. She takes refuge in the jungle, in a hidden village of escaped slaves. The weeks that Map spends with them influence her ideas about slavery. Map's return to her father and to the world in which slaves are considered inferior is then only temporary - she decides to return to the marron village.
